Today is the birthday of the late British Major-General Orde Charles Wingate, born on this date on February 26, 1903.

Wingate is regarded as one of the founders of modern guerilla warfare, organizing in 1941 the Gideon Force(a mix of British, Sudanese and Ethiopian fighters), which carried out attacks against Italian forces occupying Ethiopia.

Wingate was killed in a plane crash in India returning from Burma, on March 24, 1944.

Today there is a school in Addis Ababa dedicated to him.
