— On this date on February 27, 1972, the Associated Press reported that the Addis Ababa Agreement was signed. Brokered by Ethiopian Emperor Haile selassie and the World Council of Churches, the agreement would grant greater autonomy and religious rights for the southern Sudanese people within a united Sudan.
The agreement would perform greater religious freedoms for the Christian population in the south and bring an end to the First Sudanese Civil War that began in 1955. The 1972 Agreement would be enviable broken on June 5, 1983 when the north declared Sharia Law for all Sudan, reigniting the Second Sudanese Civil War which lasted until 2005. Today Sudan has formally separated.
