Celebrating Historic Firsts this International Women’s Day
On May 16, 2000. the Ethiopian Evangelical Church, Mekane Eyesus, ordained its first Lutheran priest Dr. Bekure Daba.Rev. Dr. Bekure Daba, age 39 at the time of her ordination, completed her Master’s degree in theological education at Chester University, in England. Rev. Dr. Bekure Daba is married to Rev. Tesso Jaleta and they have three sons.
The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) was founded in 1959, when a number Lutheran and Presbyterian church groups in Ethiopia united as a single religious organization. The EECMY claimed almost 2.3 million members in 2007; according to its 2016 statistics, and has registered 8.3 million baptized members.
